Hannes Brunner, a sculptor living in Berlin and Zürich, works with poor materials, such as cardboard, newsprint paper, wire mesh, and paraffin. Maschinenpark Fahrzeuge Orchester is an artist’s book documenting the fragile objects that he created with the least possible technical effort. Titles such as “Lawn Mower” or “Crashed Car” playfully evoke and simulanteously suspend the hardness, metallic weight, and destructive power of engines. But the velocity and polish of the Modern Age are gone, once these objects are recreated in brownish cheap materials. They are stopped in mid-flight, so to speak. The profane material, cardboard, becomes a membrane able to absorb a musical energy that is reminiscent of the vulnerable imperfection of the human body or of sensory organs.
