Merja Salo

Merja Salo (b.1953, † 2018) was a Professor of Photography and Visual Communication at the Aalto University and School for Design and Art in Helsinki, Finland.  She publicized both academic and photographic works. Her most important publications include Muodin ikuistajat — muotivalokuvaus Suomessa (Immortalising Fashion. The History of Finnish Fashion Photography) from 2005 and IMAGEWARE — kuvajournalismi mediafuusiossa (Imageware — Photo Journalism in Media Fusion) from 2000. Her work focuses on semiotic connections between man and nature, be it in the form of portrait photos (Human Nature — Portraits of People who have Animal Nicknames, exhibition, 1998) or urban scenes of everyday life (Black Herbarium — Illusion about Nature, a book of photographs and an exhibition, 1984).
