Carolina E. Santo, Véronique Hoegger
Buchs is a reference to four cities bearing the same name in the Swiss cantons St. Gallen, Zurich, Aargau and Lucerne. Four places with the same name in four different areas – that is the basis for a speculation about ubiquitousness that allows the line between reality and narration to become blurred. In their publication Buchs the scenographic artist Carolina E. Santo and the photographer Véronique Hoegger play a place-game that starts with wordplay: “4 Books for 4 Buchs.” In reference to Doreen Massey’s understanding of space as “simultaneity of stories so far,” the four different tales address the ordinary daily life of a young woman who appears to be both a single person and many figures at once, and whose identity is left unclear. Nothing special happens. With texts that are similar but not the same, the four books tell a related but not identical story about “non-events” that take place during a single day.
